{"id":777,"date":"2017-11-13T18:19:28","date_gmt":"2017-11-14T02:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bcmeteors.net\/?p=777"},"modified":"2017-11-13T18:19:28","modified_gmt":"2017-11-14T02:19:28","slug":"2017-11-12-crawford-bay-meteorite-by-rick-nowell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bcmeteors.net\/?p=777","title":{"rendered":"2017-11-12 : Crawford Bay Meteorite &#8211; by Rick Nowell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucalgary.ca\/hildebrand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Alan Hildebrand (a meteorite expert at the University of Calgary)<\/a> has released photos of some small Crawford Bay meteorite fragments on CBC.\u00a0 His grad student, Fabio found them.\u00a0 It was a stony chondrite.\u00a0 There are lots more pieces to find.\u00a0 Alan says:<\/p>\n<p>Finding rocks about the size of a loonie across a 20-kilometre stretch of forest is no easy task.\u00a0 But this case was different because of the video footage.\u00a0 &#8220;We know what orbit it fell from&#8230; and that&#8217;s only been done a couple dozen times,&#8221; Hildebrand said.\u00a0 &#8220;So we now know what orbit this rock was on and that, of course, tells us a little bit about the structure of our solar system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of fragments, ranging from the size of a peppercorn to a bowling ball, will have hit the ground &#8211; but Hildebrand says most will be in the forest that blankets the eastern shore of Kootenay Lake.\u00a0 He expects people will be finding fragments in the area for several years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbc.ca%2Fnews%2Fcanada%2Fcalgary%2Funiversity-calgary-researchers-meteorite-found-kootenay-1.4395368&amp;data=02%7C01%7Cwesmith%40outlook.com%7Ccb60a7eacaa64483788d08d52a9b19ef%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636461768003406938&amp;sdata=uwghD9iKorNbwWP7BKDpig19SHXAPNNb%2Bj%2Bfjd8HRTo%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">READ MORE Dr Hildebrand&#8217;s news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Where approximately to look?<\/h2>\n<p>Triangulating with these videos now locates the fireball trajectory in the sky with ~200 m uncertainty along a path 120 km long, recording its deceleration from 16 to 4 km\/s.\u00a0 Once the rock has slowed to &lt;4 km\/s it no longer produces light entering what is called &#8220;dark flight&#8221;.\u00a0 Dr. Elizabeth Silber of Brown University calculated the surviving rocks&#8217; paths as they fell to Earth pushed by atmospheric winds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-778\" src=\"https:\/\/bcmeteors.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Map_KasloMeteor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"651\" height=\"688\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bcmeteors.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Map_KasloMeteor.jpg 651w, https:\/\/bcmeteors.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Map_KasloMeteor-284x300.jpg 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The predicted meteorite fall zone &#8211; what researchers call a strewn field &#8211; is\u00a0 ~20 km long starting east of Crawford Bay and trending NNW across Bluebell Mountain to the Kootenay Lake shore north of Riondel.\u00a0 The largest meteorites will be in the north.<\/p>\n<h2>Where are the meteorites?<\/h2>\n<p>With the prediction of where meteorites would have fallen, the U of C team headed into the search area and found the first meteorite on Oct. 29 on private fields in northeastern Crawford Bay.\u00a0 Fabio Ciceri, a visiting M.Sc. student from the University of Milan made the first meteorite discovery.\u00a0 Fabio says &#8220;<strong>At first I couldn&#8217;t believe it &#8211; ever since I was a child I got up with my father to see the night sky, and it was like a dream to hold a space rock in my hand.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-780\" src=\"https:\/\/bcmeteors.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/fabio-ciceri1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bcmeteors.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/fabio-ciceri1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/bcmeteors.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/fabio-ciceri1-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>A meteorite chunk was found by Fabio Ciceri, a masters student from the University of Milan who is studying at the University of Calgary.
